Chelsea are weighing up a swoop for Marc Guehi, with the defender set to become a free agent next summer.
Chelsea circle back for Guehi
Marc Guehi is once again on the Chelsea radar. The Crystal Palace skipper came through the ranks of the Blues. Now, he is being lined up for a potential return to the West London side. With his contract running down, Palace risk losing one of their best players on a free next summer.
Enzo Maresca’s side have been struggling at the back this season. They see Guehi as a solution to their problem. Injuries and inconsistency have haunted their defense in the recent times. Given that, bringing in the Englishman who is familiar with the club’s DNA looks like a smart play.
Sources close to the deal suggest the Blues are willing to wait until the summer to snap him up without paying a fee.
A battle brewing in the market
Guehi’s stock is rising, and Chelsea aren’t the only side watching closely. Liverpool are expected to test the waters as well. Arne Slot’s side is always on the lookout for reliable defenders.
The 25-year-old has been hailed as “exceptional” by scouts. His ability to stay calm under pressure makes him an ideal signing for any top-six side in the PL. For Chelsea, though, there’s an extra layer of motivation. They will be re-signing one of their own and solving the issue that’s been hurting them all season.
With a free transfer on the cards, competition will be fierce. But, whoever lands him will secure one of the most underrated defenders in the league.
Author’s Opinion:
Bringing Guehi back to Stamford Bridge makes good sense. Chelsea need stability at the back, and if they can land him on a free, it would be a steal. The only question is whether the player sees his future in blue or elsewhere.
