Chelsea have launched a move to sign PSG keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma as they look to find a new No 1. The Italian goalkeeper has one year left on his PSG contract — which runs until June 2026 — and there has been plenty of speculation surrounding his future.
Contract Situation at PSG
Donnarumma, 25, has one year left on his contract. However, negotiations for contract extension between the keeper and PSG are believed to have stalled which leaves the French club liable to receive offers. Reputable sources such as L’Équipe and Gazzetta dello Sport claim PSG are growing desperate to sort out the situation as Donnarumma’s form and position continue to impact, with competition from new arrivals stepping up.
Since joining PSG in 2021, Donnarumma has impressed with his shot-shock capabilities, as well as criticised for his lack of consistency. The Euro 2020 champion has so far to completely nail down the number one spot which is only leading to more questions about his long-term place in Paris. Clubs value him at approximately €40 million, factoring in both his proven quality and the contract uncertainty that could see him leave for free next summer.
Chelsea’s Interest
Chelsea’s goalkeeping situation remains unsettled. With Robert Sánchez’s long-term role not guaranteed no Kepa Arrizabalaga in the mix anymore, the Blues are pushing hard to acquire a dependable No.1. That’s why, as a mix of youth, international pedigree, and Premier League know-how, Donnarumma is number one on Chelsea’s wish-list.
Chelsea have also shown interest in Atletico’s Diogo Costa and Illan Meslier, alongside Donnarumma. But his high profile and track record of playing in top-tier competitions make Donnarumma Chelsea’s preference this summer.
With one year to go before the end of Donnarumma’s PSG deal, there are still concerns from the PSG camp over renewing the contract and that’s where Chelsea, and other suitors may make the most of the opportunity while they still can.
