Chelsea eye reunion with English defender

Chelsea are now pushing hard to bring English defender back. But, they face stiff competition from some of England’s biggest rivals.

English defender back on Chelsea radar

Chelsea are plotting a move for Marc Guehi, who is nearing the end of his contract with Crystal Palace. The English defender was Liverpool’s top target in the summer. But, Palace refused to sanction the deal after failing to find a replacement.

The Reds remain frontrunners, yet Chelsea’s late entry could change the game. Guehi knows the London club well, having come through their academy before moving on for regular football. At the moment, Enzo Maresca’s side are struggling defensively.

That said, the return of a player who already understands the culture and demands of the club makes plenty of sense. He wouldn’t need time to adapt and could slot straight into their backline.

Manchester United and Arsenal are also watching closely. Man Utd is looking for a long-term replacement for Harry Maguire, who is undoubtedly beyond his best. The Gunners have plenty of options at the back and it could be more difficult for Guehi to regular minutes. For a defender in his prime years, that decision will be key.

Liverpool still favourites

Despite Chelsea’s interest, Liverpool still look best placed. They chased Guehi all summer and see him as the perfect fit for Arne Slot’s system. With Ibrahima Konate yet to commit to a new deal, the Palace captain would be a ready-made replacement. The Reds’ reputation for molding defenders could entice Guehi.

That said, Chelsea’s lure is still strong because they are seeking stability at the back. If Guehi wants to be the face of a rebuild and play a leading role, Stamford Bridge could be the place to go. The battle between these clubs will only heat up as his contract runs down. Given that, Palace will be powerless once the season ends.

Author’s Opinion:

Guehi is too good to stay at Palace much longer. If Chelsea are serious, they should strike early. Waiting could see him head north to Liverpool, who rarely miss out on a defender they want.
