Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has dropped a major hint that new signing João Pedro could be handed a start in the Club World Cup semi-final against Fluminense. The £60million signing from Brighton made an immediate impact off the bench in the previous round.
Pedro’s fitness and sharpness has pleased the coaching staff despite only recently returning from a holiday in Brazil. Given Liam Delap’s suspension, the Brazilian forward is a now a good shout for the playing XI.
João Pedro Impresses for Chelsea Ahead of Semi-Final
Pedro was a second-half substitute in the quarter-final victory against Palmeiras and helped Chelsea to transform the game. Maresca spoke of his condition and readiness, “Even if he was on holiday, he looks sharp, he looks good.”
The 22-year-old confessed that he trained regularly with a personal coach during his time off to remain match sharp. His work ethic and early success has propelled him up the order of preference, especially with Nicolas Jackson currently struggling for form.
Maresca has limited choices up top and must now rejig his attack. It’s an advantage tactically because Chelsea can use Pedro in any position across the attack. Staff have also noticed his on-field chemistry with Cole Palmer and Raheem Sterling in training.
Facing His Boyhood Club in a High-Stakes Clash
Fluminense will pose a significant test, with an experienced team, including former Chelsea star Thiago Silva. The contest holds emotional importance for João Pedro — he is returning to play against his boyhood club, where he developed in the youth ranks.
Chelsea are trying to reach their first Club World Cup final during Maresca’s tenure. With Delap sidelined and Jackson out of form, João Pedro is likely to lead the line in the biggest game of his fledgling Chelsea career. If he put on a masterclass he will immediately become a central figure in Maresca’s brand of play.
