Chelsea plan to hand Marc Cucurella a new contract as the Spaniard becomes a key figure in Enzo Maresca’s long-term ideas. The 27-year-old was considered a possible candidate for the exit door but has shown excellent performances and great tactical versatility.
Despite recent rumours linking him with a shock move to Al Nassr, there has been no discussions with Chelsea, who are standing firm: Cucurella is staying.
New contract incoming as Cucurella earns Maresca’s trust
The Blues are working behind the scenes to extend Cucurella’s current deal, which runs until 2028. Maresca is a huge fan of the defender’s high work rate and positional understanding, particularly following his performances at the back end of last season and in pre-season games. For Chelsea, he is both a starter and a culture-setter in the dressing room and a voice on the field.
Though Cucurella caused internal debate in previous windows, the new coaching team has clearly expressed their admiration for his tactical development. They plan to start negotiations over new terms soon, looking for better pay and some long-term assurances. The club see his a captaincy as a key ingredient in creating a more unified and resilient squad.
Jorrel Hato lined up to support and rotate
Chelsea also continue to track Ajax starlet Jorrel Hato, who can play at both left-back and centre-back. But his addition wouldn’t affect Cucurella’s status. The aspiration is to have depth, not displacement.
Hato, only 18, offers a development option on both defensive flanks and centrally. The Blues see him as a future starter but, with Cucurella set to anchor the left for now, they plan to ease the Dutchman in carefully. Chelsea believe Hato’s versatility and maturity at such a young age could prove invaluable across competitions.
It’s Chelsea’s defensive jigsaw starting to take shape – and Marc Cucurella is a big part of it.
