Chelsea have begun discussions regarding a summer deal for Ajax defender Jorrel Hato, but both clubs are currently at odds over the value of the teenager.
Reports claim Chelsea have offered €40 million, while Ajax demand closer to £60 million. The large difference presents a serious stumbling block for the Premier League club, who see Hato as a future first-teamer.
The 19-year-old has emerged as one of continent’s most talented young defenders – with the ability to operate at centre-half or on the left. He played more than 50 times at senior level last season across all competitions, already captains Ajax, has earned senior national call-ups, and attracts interest from clubs across the continent.
Ajax Playing Hardball Over Star Defender
Ajax are under no pressure to sell, with Hato tied to a long-term contract until 2028. The Dutch giants see him a a cornerstone of their rebuild and won’t budge on their valuation without a serious offer.
Ajax are open to negotiations but consider Jorrel Hato as one of their most valuable commodities and aren’t budging. And his market value, given his versatility and calm on the ball and leadership abilities, has only gone up.
The teenager has reportedly attracted interest from several top clubs, but Chelsea are seemingly in pole position to land the youngster if they can agree terms with Ajax.
Chelsea Eyeing Defensive Reinforcements
Chelsea’s decision to sign Hato is consistent with their plan of rejuvenating the squad under Enzo Maresca. The Blues are preparing for the potential departure of defenders, including Ben Chilwell, and view Hato as a long-term solution to provide cover for Marc Cucurella in the coming years.
With Maresca wanting to play out from the back, technical defenders such as Hato are well suited. Chelsea are continuing negotiations and are optimistic of a breakthrough in the next few weeks.
