Newcastle have agreed a loan deal for former Arsenal keeper Aaron Ramsdale to St James’ Park. The 27-year-old will undergo his medical soon before the move is confirmed.
New face between the sticks
Newcastle United have finally made a breakthrough in the transfer market after sealing a loan deal for Aaron Ramsdale. The Magpies have struggled to land their primary targets this summer, especially after missing out on James Trafford.
The setback forced the club to look for other options. The former Arsenal keeper has came into the picture late in the process. The goalkeeper spent last season on loan at Southampton and now has another opportunity at PL football.
The deal involves a loan fee with an option to buy. So, that allows the club to assess the goalkeeper’s performance before having to make a permanent transfer. While Ramsdale’s numbers at Southampton raised doubts, 2.2 goals conceded per game. But, Newcastle is hopeful a fresh start will help him.
Big test for Ramsdale
The Englishman has had a mixed career by this point, including three relegations. If he’s on his game, the goalkeeper is known for sharp reflexes and sound footwork. These are the qualities that Newcastle are going to need as they prepare for a long season. There will be lots of travel across domestic and European competition.
Many are having questions over the move. However, the goalkeeper himself spoke about focus during full matches being something he struggled with. But, Newcastle’s decision to sign him on loan shows they’re moving carefully, with an escape route if things go south.
Head coach Eddie Howe is also looking for defensive reinforcements to help his new shot-stopper. Giorgio Scalvini from Atalanta is one of the names being watched. Although, his injury history may make that a tricky signing.
After failing to beat Liverpool in the race for Marc Guehi, the club is exploring all options. For now, Ramsdale gets the nod. It’s a fresh start for the keeper and fans will be hoping he grabs this chance with both gloves.
