Gabriel faces ban scare after clash with Woltemade

A former PGMOL chief believes Arsenal defender Gabriel could face a lengthy ban after a heated off-the-ball moment with Woltemade.

Gabriel could face a ban if Newcastle report

Arsenal’s comeback win at St James’ Park has been overshadowed by controversy surrounding Gabriel Magalhaes. Newcastle had taken the lead through Nick Woltemade. But, late goals from Mikel Merino and Gabriel himself flipped the game on its head.

Although, in the middle of that chaos came a point that could yet cost Arsenal dearly. After Woltemade’s opener, tensions boiled over when Gabriel appeared to strike the German forward in the face during a clash inside the box. Referee Jarred Gillett and his assistants failed to spot the incident. That left the defender free to continue. Later, it was him who went on to score the winner.

The Magpies’ bench and fans erupted in anger. They were angry at the lack of intervention from VAR.

Hackett urges action

Keith Hackett, the former PGMOL boss and FIFA referee, has since called for disciplinary action. He is insisting Gabriel should have been shown a red card. He explained that Newcastle can still file a report to the football authorities. That could see the case reviewed by an independent panel.

If found guilty, the Brazilian centre-back would be handed a ban that could stretch beyond the usual three matches. Should that happen, it leaves Mikel Arteta without one of his most reliable defenders.

For Newcastle, the frustration is doubled. They feel wronged on the day, also the player at the heart of the storm ended up delivering the knockout blow. With Arsenal chasing Liverpool at the top, losing Gabriel at this stage would be a major setback. The ball is now in Newcastle’s court, and all eyes will be on whether the club takes the matter further.

Author’s Opinion:

If Gabriel does get banned, Arsenal can only blame fortune for letting him escape in real time. Newcastle have every right to push for action. If they do, the fallout could shift the league picture in the weeks ahead.
