Gakpo left fuming after being subbed off against Poland

Cody Gakpo - Liverpool

Cody Gakpo was frustrated after being subbed off by Netherland’s manager, Ronald Koeman against Poland.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot will be keeping an eye on all the players who are away on international duties. Many players from the Reds will be participating in this year’s Euro and Copa America. The Euro has already started and Slot is very much keeping a watch on every player from his team. But one nation he would be analysing the most would be Netherlands. The newly appointed manager is himself a Dutchman and would always want his country to win any major tournament. As of now, three players from Liverpool are representing Netherlands in the Euros. Virgil Van Dijk, Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenburch have been selected by Ronald Koeman.

Cody Gakpo leaves the pitch fuming

The 25-year-old Liverpool striker was subbed off by his manager Ronald Koeman at the 81st minute. Even though the Dutch team started their Euro campaign with a victory against Robert Lewandowski’s Poland, Gakpo wasn’t happy with the manager’s decision. Van Dijk was the only Liverpool player who played the entire game, while Gravenburch did not get any minute for himself.

Gakpo did not understand as to why he was subbed off by his manager. He was the one who scored the equaliser against Poland. He was shining in the pitch with every touch he took.

“I don’t know why I had to come out, but at least there was nothing wrong with me”

Gakpo on being subbed off, reported by Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf.

Was Koeman right in subbing Gakpo off?

Many might question Gakpo’s reaction but won’t doubt Koeman’s decision of taking him off. The Dutch striker was shining brightly on the pitch. In his opening match, he scored a goal which was the equaliser against Poland. But still he was subbed off at the 81st minute which left him fuming.

Koeman made a double change at that time. Alongside Gakpo, Memphis Depay was also subbed off. Jeremie Frimpong and Wout Weghorst. They both played extremely well, bringing fresh legs on the pitch and started quick attacks down the right wing. To top it off, Wout Weghorst scored the winning goal with his first touch in the game.

Netherlands won their first game in the Euros thanks to Weghorst’s last minute goal and especially Koeman’s right idea and timing in bringing him on. This situation will overlook the fact that Gakpo wasn’t satisfied with the decision of subbing him off.

Another superb tournament for Gakpo?

Gakpo could really have another brilliant international campaign in his professional career. In the 2022 World Cup, he performed really well due to which Liverpool later bought him from PSV for $66 million. He managed to score 3 goals in his first World Cup and he has already scored his first goal in this Euro campaign in the opening game. He could really surpass himself in this tournament which will make Slot expect from him more as the club season is just a couple of months away.
