Garnacho debut leaves questions for Chelsea

Garnacho finally made his full debut for Chelsea against Lincoln, but his game left fans with mixed feelings.

A slow debut in Chelsea colors for Garnacho

Alejandro Garnacho’s move to Stamford Bridge carried plenty of hype after his £40m switch from Man United. But, his first proper start for the Blues didn’t set the stage alight.

The winger was brought in to bring some excitement in the League Cup game against Lincoln. The young player was unable to show his flair and speed. Garnacho had hardly any influence on the match during the first half with only 23 touches. Although, the lack of creativity was very concerning.

No dribble attempts and an unsuccessful cross summed up a cautious approach. That is especially for a player brought in to show pace and unpredictability. With Lincoln grabbing the lead before halftime, the pressure on him to deliver grew heavier.

Missed chance to shine

Chelsea flipped the script in the second half with Tyrique George and Facundo Buonanotte finding the net. But, Garnacho’s role in that turnaround was small. He remained on the pitch yet failed to make his mark on the game. Enzo Maresca eventually replaced him with young Brazilian Estevao just past the hour mark. That was a move that hinted at frustration over the winger’s muted display.

For Garnacho, the night felt like a missed opportunity. After brief appearances, this was his opportunity to show that he could make a start with the other wingers on the team. But, he found it tough to make any impact. That suggested he is still adapting to his new surroundings, and Maresca’s demands.

Author’s Position:

Garnacho is a player with plenty of potential, although we didn’t see that in his opening game for Chelsea. He is a reminder of how a player may require some time to settle in after a transfer to a new club. To gain the fans’ trust, he must find that fearless element within himself again.
