Arsenal have waved goodbye to Jakub Kiwior, who has sealed a switch to Porto on loan with a buy option.
Arsenal let go of star defender
The buzz around Kiwior signing from Spezia in January 2022 for somewhat close to £20m, was very real. Arsenal fans were excited about a player that would provide versatility in the backline. He gives some depth at centre back and left back as well. But, the player never really convinced head coach Mikel Arteta.
The defender racked up 68 appearances, but most came in rotation or as cover. He was never trusted to nail down a starting role, and the timing of his exit tells its own story. Porto’s move is a clear signal that they see untapped potential where Arsenal saw uncertainty.
The Portuguese side has agreed to a deal that could eventually cost them £23.4m including add-ons. It feels like the Gunners might have cut ties just when Kiwior could have been entering his prime.
Porto bring in Jakub Kiwior
The twist here is that Arsenal only pulled the trigger after securing Bayer Leverkusen’s Piero Hincapie on loan. The defender is valued far higher at £45m if they decide to buy.
Now, Porto have a chance to turn Kiwior into a defensive rock for years. Meanwhile, Arsenal gamble on another incoming project. The Gunners may have thought they were upgrading, yet this move could easily come back to haunt them if Kiwior thrives in Portugal.
Deadline day moves are always surprising. But, this one has the air of a decision that could split fans for a long time.
Author’s Opinion:
Arsenal may have been too quick to cut their losses. Jakub Kiwior never looked terrible, just underused. Porto could be the big winners here if he finally gets a run of games.
