Joao Cancelo Prefers Chelsea Defender Over Josko Gvardiol

Graham Potter

It appears that Joao Cancelo thinks a defender from Chelsea is better than Josko Gvardiol.

Interestingly, the player who wears Manchester City’s number 24 now plays in the same position as Joao Cancelo used to. Last season, Nathan Ake took that spot, but this season, Josko Gvardiol seems to be the team’s main left-back. This is the position where Joao Cancelo arguably played his best football at Manchester City.

Micah Richards also praised the 22-year-old for getting much better at playing left-back, especially in recent games.

Cancelo’s Opinion: Chelsea’s Defender Outshines Gvardiol

The Croatian player has been outstanding all season for Manchester City, and some say he should be in the Premier League’s Team of the Season. Alongside Destiny Udogie and Emerson Palmieri, he’s arguably been the best left-back in the league.

Gvardiol is one of the few players City signed during Guardiola’s time as manager who has been very successful in his first season.

In a YouTube video with Shoot For Love, Joao Cancelo ranked Josko Gvardiol in tenth place and Thiago Silva in first place while rating players without knowing who they were.

Comparing Joao Cancelo’s Evaluation of Thiago Silva and Josko Gvardiol

In our opinion, Joao Cancelo might be judging Thiago Silva based on his entire career rather than how he’s currently playing compared to Josko Gvardiol.

Thiago Silva, who is 39 years old, is starting to show signs of aging in what has been a tough season for him. He’s been part of a defense that has conceded a lot of goals in the Premier League this season.

On the other hand, Gvardiol has been playing for a City defense that has let in fewer goals in the division and has even scored four goals himself this season.

Considering Thiago Silva’s impressive career, many people might prefer him over Josko Gvardiol, as Joao Cancelo did. But based on this season’s performance, Gvardiol seems to have an advantage over the former PSG captain.
