João Félix Eyes Benfica Return After Chelsea Snub

João Félix has admitted he wants to return to Benfica, throwing fresh doubt on his future after a disappointing loan at Chelsea. The Portugal forward is set to leave Atlético Madrid this summer and has turned towards his roots.

Chelsea Loan Ends, João Félix Faces Uncertain Future

The 25-year-old was on loan at Chelsea for the 2023-24 season but the Premier League club did not take up their option to buy. And now with Enzo Maresca at the helm, prioritizing youth development and financial prudence, there is no place for Félix in the long-term vision of the Blues.

Félix then joined AC Milan on loan after Chelsea but struggled to truly shine. Nor does his parent club Atlético Madrid look like they want him back. Félix has struggled to adapt to Diego Simeone’s game plan, and the tension between them has continued to grow. With both Chelsea and Atletico ruled out, the striker is in favour of making a decision on his future this week.

Despite all the talent, Félix’s career has stalled over the past couple of seasons, with poor performances and numerous loan spells. Atlético Madrid still hold his contract until 2031, complicating any permanent departure.

Benfica Return on the Cards?

In his most recent interview, discussing his future, João Félix conceded, “If I had to choose, I’d return to Benfica.” The comment has excited fans of the Portuguese giants, with whom Félix began his professional career before joining Atlético in 2019 for a then club-record fee.

Barcelona was formerly the favored destination, but Félix’s remarks indicate a sudden change in direction. Félix rejected big-money proposals from clubs in Saudi Arabia and remains determined to continue making a name for himself in Europe. Benfica are hamstrung in terms of finances, and a full transfer may prove impossible to pull off due to Félix’s €8m-a-year wages being beyond their wage structure.

For now, João Félix is in limbo — but his latest words make it obvious where his heart really is.
