Senne Lammens might soon complete a move to Man Utd. The Belgian keeper could be given a shirt number no player has ever worn at the club.
Lammens set to join Man Utd
Manchester United have already strengthened their attack this summer. But the real issue for Ruben Amorim lies between the sticks. Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir have struggled to convince, leaving United desperate for a fresh option. That’s where Senne Lammens comes in.
The Antwerp goalkeeper is expected to leave for Old Trafford before September 1. He is not yet a superstar but his record in Belgium is gaining enough notice. This season he has only allowed one goal per match on average and 11 saves from 15 shots. He is statistically one of the best keepers in his league.
The mystery of No. 91
What makes this deal more interesting is the shirt number saga. Utd’s famous No. 1 could be vacant if Bayindir leaves. Lammens has a history of wearing the highly unusual No. 91. That is a number he sported at both Club Brugge and Antwerp.
At youth level, he tried the more traditional No. 1 and also dabbled with No. 12 and 13. But, his preference for 91 has stuck with him. EPL rules allow numbers up to 99. That means Lammens could become the first United player in history to wear it.
Onana is already settled on 24 and others holding his past numbers. So, Man Utd fans will see a keeper with one of the strangest squad numbers in club history. The young goalkeeper is looking to make a name for himself.
Author’s Opinion
Should Lammens take No. 91, it would be a change at a club steeped in tradition. If he performs, fans will soon not care with what is on his back.
