Liverpool FC has inaugurated a memorial plaque for former chairman and owner David Moores at the Kirkby Academy. This memorial plaque celebrates David and his family contribution made to the club over a span of 16 years and the influence he had on the first team and the youth team during his tenure.
Driving Liverpool to Glory
Moores died in July 2022 at the age of 76, took over as Liverpool chairman in September 1991. During his spell in charge of the club, he was at the helm for 10 major honours, including the cup treble of 2000-01 and Champions League win in 2005. He was instrumental in the appointments of Gerard Houllier and Rafeal Benitez and helped bring silverware and stability to Anfield.
He resigned from the board in 2007 after relinquishing his majority share, but continued as an honorary life president. Under Moores’ guidance, the Kirkby Academy opened in 1998, offering a modern facility for youth development—a project that now sees one of its pitches renamed in his honour.
Honouring a Lifelong Red
Members of the Moores family, club legends Sir Kenny Dalglish, Roy Evans, Sammy Lee, Phil Thompson, Academy director Alex Inglethorpe, and chief legal officer Jonathan Bamber attended the event. Bamber remarked: “David will always be part of this club’s glorious history, and will be remembered as a passionate fan in the boardroom.”
David Moores Jr and Lisa Moores-Pearce further stated: “Development of young players was something he was passionate about, so it’s especially touching that the plaque is here at the Academy on the pitch where young players first play.”
Author’s Opinion
The tribute deeply reflects the devotion David Moores had towards the club as a fan and as a leader. Moreover, his vision for youth development will forever remain the strongest foundation of the club, and the plaque at Kirkby Academy will inspire and motivate young players for many years, guiding all future Reds.
