Liverpool agree deal for Preston keeper Freddie Woodman

Liverpool secure free move for goalkeeper Freddie Woodman from Preston North End.

Freddie Woodman Adds Depth to Liverpool’s Goalkeeping Ranks

Liverpool announced the signing of Freddie Woodman on a free transfer from Preston North End.

The English goalkeeper played 22 times in the Championship last season. He will be joining Arne Slot’s squad for pre-season next month. Caoimhin Kelleher is sold to Brentford this window. Both Vitezslav Jaros and Harvey Davies are heading out on loan. The Reds were on the hunt for an experienced and reliable backup to support Alisson Becker. Though, Giorgi Mamardashvili is also joining the squad from Valencia this term.

Woodman fits the bill perfectly. He has steady hands, solid experience, and is available for nothing. Despite being a new arrival, he won’t take up a non-homegrown spot in Liverpool’s UEFA squad. That’s because of his English football background. That makes him a smart addition on and off the pitch.

Homegrown Talent with Experience Joins Reds

Freddie Woodman is no stranger to big moments. He was a part of the England Under-20 World Cup winners in 2017, and through his career has played for Newcastle United, Kilmarnock, Swansea City and Preston. The keeper has over 300 senior appearances and 99 clean sheets.

The London-born keeper is also the godson of England manager Gareth Southgate. Meanwhile, his father Andrew is managing League Two side Bromley. Although, young keeper Armin Pecsi was expected to step up as third-choice. But, the surprise signing of Woodman signals Liverpool’s intention to rely on a more seasoned option between the sticks.

Woodman’s deal officially starts on July 1 when his Preston contract comes to an end. He will have his first training on July 8 at the AXA Centre. It is a signing that will enhance Reds’ squad depth before what is sure to be a challenging 2025/26 season.
