After a widely successful 9 years at Anfield, Liverpool FC parted ways with Jurgen Klopp. He made Liverpool win every championship possible under his leadership. Klopp’s constant tactics and masterclass served as very tough competition to even a manager like Pep Guardiola. He even beat Manchester City in the title race in the 2019/20 season. His departure has opened the door for Arne Slot to come in and take Liverpool to hopefully new heights. The Dutch manager has a very similar style of play compared to the previous manager. The board has entrusted him to take the club higher and hopefully add more championships to the club’s trophy cabinet.
Arne Slot seems to have already started his mission of improving the squad. One of the main targets of the Dutch manager is the Argentine midfielder Alan Varela. The midfielder currently plays for Porto FC in Liga Portugal and has been very impressive in his time there. The 22-year-old has been very impressive in his style of play and is one of Porto’s important players. The young player has a release clause of 60.4 million which signifies how good of a talent he is. It has also been reported by Argentine journalist Leo Pardizo that the Reds have already started their talks in bringing him to Anfield. However, they face tough competition from Bayern Munich and Premier League rivals Manchester City as well.
Both rivals have been winning their respective leagues on a regular basis. This will also influence the youngster’s decision on where he would like to end up. Bayern recently announced Kompany as their manager. Manchester City might be parting ways with Pep soon. This may give Liverpool an advantage against the others as Slot might be a more established name compared to the other new managers.
Will Varela join the Reds?
Alan Varela who is only 22 years old will be looking to join a club where he can start regularly. Many youngsters have blossomed out on the big stage and he would love to be mentioned amongst those names in the future. Manchester City does not seem like a likely destination if he wants to be a regular starter. The Sky-blues already have Foden, De Bryne and Rodri in the midfield. It does seem likely that Liverpool or Bayern Munich will be his next destination. Bayern will be looking to link the youngster with Jamal Musiala and develop a midfield duo. Whereas in Liverpool he might link up in play with Dominic Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister. The style of play of all 3 players will complement each other and will help the forwards be more free. Such linkups will allow the youngster more goal-scoring opportunities and even add to his assist tally.
The youngster could be the Reds first signing of the summer and the fans have already started buzzing about it. Liverpool’s midfield seemed very lack luster last season and his ability to play defensive and central roles will be a bonus. This will cover a lot of gaps and problems related to Liverpool’s line-up. Mistakes from the midfield have cost Liverpool the title in the past as well.
Slot could look to bring in new players around this fresh talent and hopefully restructure the Liverpool squad into champions once again. The manager is very much focused on the midfield right now and will be looking for players in other positions very soon as well. Porto might want to keep their young star as well. They have consistently been securing Champions League football and will definitely be looking to improve their chances in the competition.
