Man United in discussions with £80m ace’s camp over a new deal

Manchester United Harry Maguire

Manchester United have formally opened talks with Harry Maguire over a new contract, as his current deal edges toward expiry in June. United and its camp have already held a face-to-face meeting to begin ironing out terms. The Red Devils clearly value what he brings and want to keep him beyond the summer.

Why United Are Still Keen on Maguire

Back in 2019, United broke their transfer record to sign Maguire from Leicester for £80 million, making him the world’s most expensive defender at the time. Over the years, he’s had his critics and ups and downs, but he still commands respect—and United sees him as more than just a defender.

Under Rúben Amorim, Maguire fits neatly into a back three. His experience in reading attacks, organizing teammates, and stepping into midfield lines when needed adds balance and leadership to United’s defensive setup. Even though he hasn’t started every match this season, his presence in the squad carries weight.

What’s Holding Up the Deal & Maguire’s Position

The stumbling block appears to be the financial side. Romano has confirmed that while United are “happy with Maguire, on and off the pitch,” they won’t maintain his old terms.

In recent times, his weekly wage dropped from around £190,000 to approximately £140,000 after United failed to qualify for the Champions League. Any new agreement will likely reflect that reduced level or include further revisions.

If no deal gets done, Maguire could explore a free transfer in January or depart when his contract ends. But sources close to the negotiations say he wants to stay, and United would prefer continuity over losing him for nothing.

Maguire’s Role & Importance Going Forward

Maguire lends more than defensive solidity: he brings leadership, calm under pressure, and tactical intelligence. When United switches to three at the back, he often occupies the central role—balancing aggression and composure.  Young defenders around him can benefit from his experience, too.

Even when he’s not first pick, having him available improves squad depth. In cup games or periods of fixture congestion, Maguire gives the coaching staff a trusted option who knows the club’s expectations. United would lose more than a defender if they lose Maguire—they’d lose a voice, a stabilizer, and a steady hand in transitions.
