Mason Mount and Matheus Cunha will be fit to face Chelsea in Saturday’s crucial Premier League clash with both recovering faster than expected, says Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim. The news follows United’s 3-0 loss at the hands of Manchester City and represents an increasing pressure on the Portuguese to turn round a disappointing start to their campaign.
Mount and Cunha Back in Action
Both Mount and Cunha were absent for the derby defeat having sustained injuries in the 3-2 win over Burnley at the beginning of the month. Their re-inclusion comes as welcome news for Amorim who badly needs to get points on the board and ease some pressure after a tough sequence of results.
“Dalot is out. Mason is in the squad, him and Cunha are in the squad. Licha still out. I think that is it,” Amorim confirmed at Carrington. The inclusion of Mount and Cunha adds quality and options in midfield and attack as United prepare for a crucial clash against Chelsea.
Injury Situation and Martinez Progress
Defender Diogo Dalot is unavailable having withdrawn from international duty with Portugal due to muscle soreness. Tyrell Malacia is nearing a return and Amorim said the left-back has been back in training with the Under-21s as he builds up for a match return.
Lisandro Martinez has also resumed training on the grass following his long-term anterior cruciate ligament injury. Amorim admitted United have missed Martinez’s “aggression” but stressed patience in his recovery.
“It’s really important that Martinez is nearing a return,” Amorim said. “When you have that injury you recover very fast and then there is a boring part where it looks like you don’t go to the next step.”
Author’s Opinion
Mount and Cunha’s return could not come at a better time for United. Amorim has faced mounting criticism for results, and while the board insists it still supports him, football ultimately judges managers on wins. A strong performance against Chelsea could offer him breathing room, but another setback may only deepen uncertainty around his future.
