Manchester United Plot Major Goalkeeper Move for 2026

Manchester United will prioritise signing a new first-choice goalkeeper next year, even after completing a deadline day deal for Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp. Head coach Ruben Amorim has openly admitted that United still lack an undisputed No.1 option.

Bayindir’s Struggles and Onana’s Exit

Altay Bayindir has started all of United’s Premier League matches this season, but his shaky displays have already raised concerns, with errors proving costly against Arsenal and Burnley. Andre Onana has joined Trabzonspor on a season-long loan, and he will likely fail to regain the starting role when he returns. Veteran Tom Heaton, who turns 40 in April, still sits as third choice, has not played since February 2023, and looks set to retire at the end of the season.

United explored alternatives in the summer, failing with a loan enquiry for Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez. The World Cup winner, 33, was keen on the move and even left out of Villa’s squad during negotiations. AC Milan’s Mike Maignan has emerged as another potential target. He will enter the final year of his contract in 2026, and the same agency that represents Bryan Mbeumo also manages him.

Midfield Reinforcement Also on the Agenda

While the goalkeeper situation is pressing, Manchester United also intend to strengthen midfield next summer. Brighton’s Carlos Baleba has been identified as a target, with Casemiro’s £300,000-a-week contract expiring at the end of the season. The Brazilian’s likely departure would free up significant wage space for reinvestment. With Mason Mount struggling for fitness and Bruno Fernandes entering the final two years of his deal, United’s depth in midfield has become a concern.

Author’s View

United’s goalkeeper dilemma highlights the lack of clarity in Amorim’s squad. Bayindir and Lammens provide cover but not conviction, while Onana looks finished at Old Trafford. A proven No.1, along with a dominant midfielder, is important if United are to challenge at the highest level once more.
