Eberechi Eze has begun his life at Arsenal after his summer move from Crystal Palace. The debate around his best position has already kicked off.
Head coach Mikel Arteta has slotted him in on the left side of attack. He is linking up with Viktor Gyokeres and Noni Madueke. Eze showed moments of quality against Nottingham Forest and managed to provide an assist. Although, his UCL appearance against Athletic Club served to show his continued struggles out on the flank.
Eze made a name for himself at Palace pulling the strings from midfield, with his vision and creativity on display. That is exactly what Martin Keown has called on Arteta to reconsider for Arsenal’s clash with Manchester City.
Speaking on TNT Sports, Keown said: “There is the possibility that Eze could play as a midfield player. I’d start with Martinelli and play Eze in midfield. Eze is a player that I want playing in that midfield.”
City could force a tactical change
The upcoming game at the Etihad is no ordinary fixture. Arsenal know Pep Guardiola’s City will dominate spells of possession, and that’s where someone like Eze could tilt the balance. With Martin Odegaard out injured, there’s a natural opening in midfield. Keown believes this is the moment to unleash Eze in his most dangerous role.
Arteta has gone with a more cautious midfield setup in big away games before. But, City demand a mix of creativity and control. Slotting Eze behind the striker rather than shackling him to the wing could give Arsenal both.
Still, with competition from Rice, Zubimendi, Merino, and Nwaneri, it’s far from guaranteed. The decision now rests with Arteta. He can stick with the current plan or back Keown’s call for a change.

Keown has a point. Eze’s skillset would be most useful in the middle of the field, not the touchline. Arsenal need all the creativity against City. So, playing Eze in the centre could be the difference.
