Mathis Amougou has made a permanent move from Chelsea to sister club RC Strasbourg. The 19-year-old departs Stamford Bridge just five months after joining the Blues in a deal which underlines the club’s continued investment in a long-term multi-club approach to develop young talents.
Permanent Deal with Buy-Back Clause Included
Strasbourg & Chelsea, both owned by BlueCo, have announced a long-term deal for Amougou until 2030. The deal involves buy-backs, with Chelsea retaining the rights to re-sign the French midfielder later. Unspecified fee but netting is done in-house due to the co-ownership.
Amougou, 20, originally intended to sign on loan but Chelsea converted the deal to a permanent transfer to free up a non-English loan place in their squad. The midfielder also made it very clear that he would rather return to Ligue 1 with an eye toward more minutes and better opportunities to make an impact against domestic competition.
Amougou arrived at Chelsea in February 2025 for €15 million, and has played just twice since then – one Premier League outing, in which he faced Southampton, and one European one, against Legia Warsaw in the UEFA Conference League, where he enjoyed 20 minutes of game time. He didn’t play in any senior team games, and Chelsea mainly featured him as a practice player with the development squad.
Strasbourg Reinforce Midfield After Exits
RC Strasbourg was looking to strengthen its midfield after Andrey Santos returned to Chelsea and Habib Diarra left the club. Strasbourg plan to include Amougou directly in the squad, expecting him to feature more prominently in Ligue 1 next term.
Chelsea and Strasbourg are actively building a broader talent pipeline under BlueCo ownership. Several other young players—such as Ishé Samuels-Smith, Mike Penders, and Kendry Páez—are also preparing to play similar roles for both clubs in the coming weeks as part of this growing, long-term development strategy aimed at accelerating youth progression across Europe.
