Manchester United’s derby hell continued with a 3-0 defeat at Manchester City in the Etihad Stadium. Goals from Phil Foden and a brace from Erling Haaland highlighted United’s defensive vulnerabilities and left them with only four points from their first four Premier League games.
One of United’s summer signings, Moroccan full-back Noussair Mazraoui did not mince his words after the loss. He agreed that the display was not good enough, however he called on there to be a collective responsibility to improve.
Mazraoui’s blunt verdict
Speaking after the final whistle, Mazraoui said: “Today was just not good enough. I feel bad, disappointed in myself, in the team, and disappointed for the fans that we couldn’t bring the performance we did lately today.”
The defender was keen to stress that losing is one thing, but putting on such a lifeless performance in the derby cut particularly deep. It was not one of those games where you can say the losing team can take positives from a narrow defeat – this was a game in which United were second best all over the pitch. You have to be very careful because after games like this one feelings are a bit high and you need to fundamentally analyse it in a calm fashion,” he said.
Pressure grows on Amorim’s side
Mazraoui’s honesty mirrors the concerns of captain Bruno Fernandes, who also admitted the level was far below Manchester United’s standards. Manager Ruben Amorim has insisted he will not abandon his philosophy, but the margin of defeat against City leaves questions over his tactical flexibility.
With Chelsea up next, the heat is on to deliver a response. The games ahead could also be crucial in the level of patience among fan and confidence in the dressing room.
Author’s Opinion
Mazraoui’s words reflect accountability and leadership, qualities United urgently need. But rhetoric must now translate into consistent, convincing results. If United cannot raise their standards quickly, this slow start risks defining the season and severely damaging long-term confidence.
