Newcastle United have begun negotiations with Chelsea over a deal to sign centre-back Axel Disasi for £26million. But, the Magpies have competition from La Liga outfit Villarreal as they look to secure the signing of the French defender this summer.
Disasi only arrived at Chelsea last term in a £38million deal from Monaco, but the Blues may be willing to sell as they revamp their defence under a new boss. The 27-year-old was loaned out to Aston Villa for the second half of the 2024/25 season and enjoyed a number of outings but also found it tough to find form.
Newcastle Make First Move
Sources close to the situation revealed that Newcastle have opened talks with regards to a possible deal for Disasi. Eddie Howe is eager to bolster his defence after an injury-plagued season exposed the club’s lack of depth at the back.
And with long-term absentees Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles sidelined, the Magpies consider Disasi as someone who can slot in right away. The Frenchman’s experience in the Premier League, aerial dominance, and comfort in possession are attributes which make him the ideal fit in Howe’s system.
Chelsea plan to offload him as part of their push to balance the books and clear out surplus players, after already reinforcing their defence with Tosin Adarabioyo. Disasi featured 32 time last season, including a loan spell at Aston Villa, but was inconsistent as Chelsea endured a turbulent season.
Villarreal Also in the Race
Though Newcastle have made an early approach, Villarreal have shown a keen interest in taking Disasi to Spain. Villarreal admire his flexibility and value his left-footed leadership at the back.
Villarreal cannot offer Newcastle’s pulling power but believe they can tempt Disasi with regular first-team football and a new challenge in La Liga. The 27-year-old is four years into his Chelsea deal but is now facing an uncertain future amid increased competition.
Discussions are continuing, with both clubs keen to wrap up the deal over the next few weeks. Chelsea hope to recoup a fee of around £26m.
