Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim is facing intense scrutiny after a 3-1 defeat at Brentford on Saturday, with talk of a replacement already swirling. Former interim manager Ralf Rangnick has reportedly highlighted Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner as a standout candidate, adding fuel to the ongoing speculation surrounding Amorim’s future.
Amorim Under Pressure
Amorim has picked up only 34 points from a possible 99 in the Premier League, which has seen United occupy places in the bottom half of the table. The hierarchy continues to publicly support him, but last month’s Carabao Cup shock exit against League Two side Grimsby Town only intensified doubts. Reports suggest United have drawn up a three-man shortlist to step in if results do not improve, with former England boss Gareth Southgate, ex-Athletic Bilbao manager Andoni Iraola, and Glasner all under consideration.
Rangnick’s Endorsement of Glasner
Rangnick, who found it tough himself during an interim stint at Old Trafford in 2021/22, has previously spoken highly of Glasner’s management. “For me, Oliver Glasner is currently one of the most exciting coaches — not only in Germany, but in all of Europe. An absolute top coach,” Rangnick told LAOLA1 in March 2023. Glasner’s work at Crystal Palace has been widely lauded; the Eagles remain unbeaten in 18 matches across all competitions and recently secured both the FA Cup and Community Shield, while also defeating Liverpool.
Given Glasner employs a similar three-at-the-back system to Amorim, United may see him as a seamless tactical fit should they act before the season’s end.
Author’s Opinion
Amorim’s start at Manchester United has been rocky, and the growing whispers about Glasner highlight the urgency at Old Trafford. While Amorim still retains the board’s support, a continued slide in form could force a decisive move — and Glasner, with his tactical acumen and winning mentality, appears perfectly positioned to step in.
