Manchester United forward Rasmus Hojlund has moved to Naples in a transfer that could see him depart England permanently. The 22-year-old joined Napoli on a season-long loan on deadline day, with terms in the move that could eventually turn it into a permanent transfer.
Champions League clause and obligations
United received a €6 million loan fee and are free of Hojlund’s salary for the season. The agreement also includes a €44 million obligation to buy, which activates if Napoli qualify for the Champions League. Fabrizio Romano meanwhile revealed that the obligation is dependent on an appearance clause too – meaning the Danish forward must reach a certain amount of games before the deal would be made permanent. The precise amount is undisclosed but Man United are believed to be confident of making up the sum.
For the Red Devils, this arrangement could represent a financial hit. Manchester United signed Højlund for around £64–72 million from Atalanta in 2023, but Napoli’s obligation totals closer to £38–44 million. Still, the structure offers the club immediate relief while shifting pressure onto Napoli’s European campaign.
Long-term release clause revealed
Beyond the loan terms, reports confirmed Rasmus Hojlund will have a €85 million release clause in his Napoli contract, valid only from summer 2027 and payable across three years. This clause ensures that should his form rise in Serie A, Napoli could command a significant fee in future sales. It also secures the Italian club against losing him on the cheap if he develops into a top striker.
Author’s view
Man United’s gamble looks pragmatic. They recoup part of their outlay and cut wage costs, while Napoli gain a young striker motivated to prove himself. Whether the clause activates depends on Champions League qualification and appearances, but for now, Rasmus Hojlund’s destiny lies in Italy.
