Once regarded as a long-term project at Stamford Bridge, the 20-year-old midfielder is now increasingly likely to leave after just a year. Several European clubs are lurking but Atlético Madrid have now made the first definite move. And crucially, Renato Veiga has shown clear interest. This is just the beginning of what could become a whirlwind saga, as Chelsea prepare for the arrival of the first formal offers.
Atlético open talks, Renato Veiga open to the move
According to fresh reports, Atlético Madrid have now made a play for Renato Veiga by contacting the player directly through his entourage. The Portuguese all rounder, who joined the Blues from FC Basel last summer, has his heart set on a switch to La Liga. Diego Simeone is a fan of his versatility in a defensive midfield role, or on the left of three centre backs, and wants to freshen up his squad after losing a raft of key players.
Atléti are accelerating talks and looking into the formula of an eventual operation. Veiga’s receptiveness to the move has spurred the Spanish club on, as they look to make their move before other suitors circle back. The player’s camp say personal terms should not be an issue.
Chelsea stick to €40m demand
Chelsea didn’t give Veiga much game time, but they refuse to budge when it comes to their asking price. They still want at least €40 million, including extras and add-ons related to performance. Chelsea’s position serves as a measure of both the high potential ceiling of the player and the club’s determination to make smart sales in order to manage PSR requirements.
Open to the prospect of a full transfer, though, Chelsea will not consider cut-price bids. Chelsea consider Atlético the favourites for now, but clubs in Germany and Italy could still join the race by meeting the Blues’ financial demands. Negotiations are continuing but the Versatile one’s Chelsea story may soon be coming to an end faster than anticipated.
