Veteran broadcaster Richard Keys believes decisions made by Arteta, will be Arsenal’s downfall in the title chase.
Richard Keys questions bold calls from Arteta
Arsenal had to rely on Gabriel Martinelli’s smart finish to rescue a point against Man City. But, sports commentator Richard Keys was far from impressed. For him, the bigger issue wasn’t the result, it was Mikel Arteta’s approach.
Keys pointed out that Eberechi Eze was on the bench once again. Instead, Arteta picked Leandro Trossard in the starting XI. That left both Eze and Martinelli waiting for their chances. Keys argued that this kind of selection error is exactly why the Gunners remain short in the title race. That is despite heavy summer spending. He believes if the Gunners’ fall short again, the blame sits squarely with the manager.
It’s not the first time Keys has raised doubts. Just a week ago, before Arsenal’s win over Nottingham Forest, he highlighted similar concerns over Arteta’s decision-making. Against City, he doubled down, insisting Eze has to be a starter in every big game.
His reasoning was simple, you don’t spend £67m on a player who lifts crowds, unlocks defenses, and then leave him out when it matters most.
Pressure mounts on the manager
After that draw, Liverpool are five points ahead of Arsenal in the league table. Now, the pressure is rising on the Gunners’ boss to finally end the league trophy drought. The club had three second-place finishes in the past three years.
The fans have backed them but they are growing restless as well. Keys’ criticism adds more fuel to the debate over whether Arteta has what it takes to get Arsenal over the line. He argued that the Spaniard risks wasting Arsenal’s attacking options by his selection and tactics.
The bigger picture is clear, Arsenal are running out of excuses. The North London side have spent over £250m in the summer window. Their squad is stronger than before. Although, if Arteta keeps questionable calls, the Gunners may fall behind in their title charge.
Author’s Opinion:
Arteta has built a side capable of winning the league. But, his choices in big games might backfire. Keys may be harsh, but Arsenal can’t afford tactical experiments if they want to lift the title.
