According to Fabrizio Romano, former Manchester United player Ruud Van Nistelrroy is tempted to join Manchester United as a coaching staff in the summer. As per the Debrief podcast, Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Nistelrroy could join his fellow Dutchman Eric Ten Hag’s coaching staff. So, the former United striker is set to return to Old Trafford after 18 years.

Nistelrooy joined Manchester United in the summer of 2000. He was at Old Trafford for five seasons from 2001 to 2006 before joining the Spanish giant Real Madrid. During his time the Dutchman scored 150 goals in 219 appearances for the Red Devils. He is also the club’s second European goalscorer with 38 goals behind Wayne Rooney.

In 2013, Ruud Van Nistelrooy joined PSV as a coaching intern working with the PSV U17s. In the following year, the Dutchman was appointed as the assistant manager of Guus Hiddink for the Netherlands national team. However, in 2018 Van Nistelrooy became the new manager of the PSV under-19s before becoming PSV’s head coach as the replacement for Roger Schmidt in March 2022. But after winning the 2023 Johan Cruff Shield and the 2022-23 KNVB Cup, the Dutchman resigned from the head coach role.

Speaking on his daily briefing podcast, Italian Fabrizio Romano said’

“What I’m hearing is that Ruud van Nistelrooy is very tempted by this possibility to go back to Manchester United. He’s still keeping his options open but in the last 24-48 hours. Van Nistelrooy is really tempted to make this new experience as an assistant coach. So I think there’s a very good possibility. I think it could also not be the only addition to the Manchester United staff because there is the intention to change something.”

After Manchester United’s worst campaign in the history of the club and finishing eighth in the table, speculation going on over Ten Hag’s future in the club. However, the FA Cup win over Premier League champion Manchester City might save the Dutchman. Earlier this month, Manchester United confirmed that Eric Ten Hag will not leave the club in the summer.

However, one of the United’s coaching staff Eric Ramsey left the club this year before joining as the head coach of Minnesota United. Bennis McCarthy is another member of the coaching staff whose contract will expire this summer. The United’s board wants to improve the backroom staff and bring in some new faces. Van Nistelrooy is one of the targets.
