Stephen Torpey has officially started work as Manchester United’s new Academy Director. His appointment, announced in August, sees him succeed Nick Cox, who has taken over as Technical Director at Everton. Torpey arrives from Brentford, where he spearheaded the relaunch of their youth Academy system.
Torpey’s career journey
Torpey arrived at Brentford in January 2024 and was the lynchpin in the club’s revamp of an ambitious Academy. He was instrumental in re-instituting a full programme from Under-9s to Under-18, which enabled the Bees to regain Category Two status.
He also played pivotal roles at two of United’s domestic rivals before Brentford. At Manchester City, Stephen Torpey was responsible for the Academy coaching programme at all age levels developing a channel between youth and first-team football. Earlier in his career, he worked with Liverpool at Foundation Phase, representing the beginning phase of a player’s development.
Torpey, who has a UEFA A licence, adds vast experience in coaching and leadership alongside United’s well-established youth philosophy.
A new era at Carrington
The new Academy Director officially began work at Carrington on Monday. He was also set to attend the Under-21s’ Premier League International Cup clash against Athletic Club at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening, reflecting his hands-on approach from the outset.
Speaking after his appointment last month, Torpey highlighted his excitement about joining United at this stage of the club’s journey. “It is obviously a great time to be joining as the club enters an exciting new era,” he said. “I can’t wait to play my role in continuing the incredible tradition of youth development here.”
Author’s Opinion
Torpey’s arrival is a statement from United that the club view their thriving Academy work as one of their few areas of real strength. Given his record at Brentford and City, fans should hope to see a clear path for the starlets. His hiring appears to be a smart and progressive move in continuing United’s proud tradition of producing home-grown stars.
