VAR sparks fresh debate after Arsenal beat Fulham

The victory of Arsenal at Fulham was clouded by a decision which put VAR in the spotlight once again.

Saka’s penalty drama in Arsenal & Fulham game

The second-half goal of Leandro Trossard confirmed the win of Arsenal against Fulham. It got them the complete three points. But, the incident that occurred prior to the goal became the most debated issue.

Bukayo Saka appeared to be fouled right at the corner of the area by the substitute of Fulham, Kevin. Referee Anthony Taylor right away indicated a penalty. The Gunners looked to have a great chance to score first. But, shortly after that VAR stepped in.

After a review, Taylor overturned his own decision, ruling there was no foul. The change in decision left Arsenal players unhappy and Fulham relieved.

PL gets questioned about VAR

The situation has brought up the whole issue of the PL’s usage of VAR again. A lot of experts and fans are of the opinion that the first decision was right. And that a penalty should have been awarded to the Gunners. Although, the overturn, they argue, highlights the inconsistency that continues to affect games this season.

The PL has now been informed about the possible error in the review process. This has added to the pressure on the league’s refereeing department. Arsenal, however, kept their eye for goal during the whole situation. Shortly after Trossard’s goal, the visitors were confirmed as the top of the table.

Nevertheless, the issue related to VAR does not show any sign of going away anytime soo. That is primarily because key calls like this can affect title races.

Author’s Opinion:

VAR was meant to bring fairness, not confusion. Arsenal’s disallowed penalty only proves how subjective technology can be when human judgment remains at its core. The PL must find solution before these errors start defining entire seasons.
