Manchester United tried to bring in Aston Villa star Emiliano Martinez on loan. But, it has been turned down by the Midlands club.
Villa Stand Firm on Martinez Decision Amidst United Interest
Manchester Utd are in the market for a new goalkeeper. This comes after Andre Onana’s inconsistent debut season leaving doubts in the air.
Emi Martinez is a name that has been of interest for some time at Old Trafford. The Argentine shot-stopper has been in great form for both Aston Villa, and his country. Utd scouts are aware of his experience and confidence.
The reports also suggested that Martinez himself was very open to joining the Red Devils. As per the reports, he “really liked” the chance of playing for one of the top clubs in the world. However, the Midlands club quickly rejected Man Utd’s loan approach. They made it clear that the World Cup winner is not available.
With four years still left on his current deal, Villa are in no rush to sell or loan their star. That is especially with Unai Emery counting on him as a key figure in their squad.
Man Utd Exploring Backup Plans
The Martinez deal is likely off the table for now. But, Man United haven’t stopped looking for options. The club is weighing whether to go for an experienced name or invest in a younger keeper.
Another possible option is Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp. The keeper is in form in the Belgian top flight. Recently, he made his first senior international appearance as well. Lammens could be a candidate that is more feasible given that he only has two years left on his contract.
Meanwhile, during talks with Villa about Martinez, Utd also made an enquiry about striker Ollie Watkins. Villa, however, have no plans to sell the forward either. So, the hunt for more firepower continues at the Old Trafford.
