Xabi Alonso picks United legend as the face of English Football

Xabi Alonso once called a Manchester United icon the true face of English football. He left out his Liverpool partner Steven Gerrard despite their bond on the pitch.

Madrid boss Xabi Alonso picks United legend Over Gerrard

In the five years after signing at Anfield, Xabi Alonso had an incredible partnership with Gerrard in central midfield. The duo most famously ended with winning the UCL in 2005.

But, when asked who best represented the English game, Alonso did not choose his captain but instead Sir Alex Ferguson. He said, prior to Man United playing Real Madrid in 2012, that Ferguson was an “idol” for the English game. He pointed to Ferguson’s near 30 years of control at Old Trafford.

The ex-United boss’ record of 13 PL titles, other domestic and European trophies, is unmatched. Alonso’s choice surprised many, firstly because he had included Gerrard in his dream European XI. Still, the Liverpool legend did not make the cut as the face of English football.

Respect beyond rivalry

Also, Alonso’s message had a prior context. Real Madrid was due to play United in the UCL during that time. The news had already been occupied by Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to Old Trafford. That said, Alonso chose Ferguson at the time. The midfielder faced the former Man Utd boss nine times in England, and won only two.

It was also clear Ferguson had been a fan of Alonso during his Real Sociedad days. He had considered signing him before Liverpool came calling as well. Although, Gerrard was his “favourite midfield partner.”

It might have stuck in the throats of Liverpool fans. Although, the honesty reflects the level of respect top players have for great players. Gerrard will always be a hero at Anfield but in Alonso’s mind, Ferguson was and is the face of English football.
