Chelsea FC has confirmed the departure of young left-back Zak Sturge, who has signed for Championship club Millwall. The 21-year-old was a man in demand following an impressive loan spell last season and that has forced Millwall’s hand early this summer.
Sturge signed for Chelsea in 2022 from Brighton and soon became a mainstay of the U21s. While he didn’t get a senior appearance with the Blues, he progressed well over two years at Cobham. The fee for the transfer has not been disclosed.
Loan success laid foundations for permanent move
Sturge spent the opening months of 2023/24 on loan at Peterborough United and made 15 appearances in all competitions. The experience was invaluable senior-level exposure as he honed his defensive game.
In February 2025, he signed for Millwall on loan and played five games in the Championship. Though sparingly used, he showed a burst, an ability to play with pace and also play under control despite pressure. His overlapping and defensive alertness provided Millwall with an alternative outlet down the left-back.
Millwall double down on Zak Sturge’s potential
Millwall moved quickly this summer to bring Sturge in permanently. Manager Alex Neil was keen to secure him on a permanent basis after seeing the work he put in both on the field and behind the scenes. The club believes there is still scope for him to be a key part going forward. Sturge, is said to be in a position to compete for a spot in the first team when the Championship season gets underway. His combination of youth, pace and tactical acumen appeals deeply to Millwall.
Chelsea thanked Sturge for his professionalism and dedication in his time at the club. He goes with the very best wishes of all the staff and fans. Meanwhile, for Zak Sturge this is an opportunity to get regular minutes at senior level and develop in such a demanding league. After two years of solid progress, he now starts the next chapter – and he’s ready to do all he can to shine in the Championship.
