Donald Trump backs United over Arsenal

Donald Trump snubs Arsenal as the US President made it clear that his loyalty in English football belongs elsewhere.

A lifelong passion for sport

Donald Trump has never been shy about his love for sport. From golf to UFC, from baseball to American football, the US President has built a reputation as a hardcore fan. At 79, now into his second term in office, he’s still making regular appearances at major events.

Only recently, he was spotted at Bethpage, taking in the Ryder Cup atmosphere. Golf is his real obsession, no surprise given he owns 17 courses worldwide under the Trump Organization banner. But, his interests stretch much further. Trump is a long-time supporter of the UFC, with a well-known friendship with Dana White.

In American football, he’s tied to the New England Patriot. That is due to his close bond with Robert Kraft and Tom Brady. And when it comes to Major League Baseball, it’s the New York Yankees who get his backing. Although, he has a soft spot for the Mets too.

Donald Trump follows United and not Arsenal

The real twist comes when the spotlight turns to football in England. In a conversation with journalist Piers Morgan in 2018, Trump was given a Gunners shirt with his name on the back. Morgan even mentioned Trump’s son Barron is an Arsenal fan. He was hoping that he could convince the President to be a fan as well, in North London.

But, Trump wasn’t biting. Instead, he admitted his PL allegiance rests firmly with Manchester United. That decision places him among a long list of global celebrities who follow the Red Devils, including Justin Timberlake. For Arsenal fans, it was a hard miss as they almost pulled him in. But, United’s pull proved too strong.

Author’s Opinion:

Trump’s pick isn’t really shocking. United’s global pull is massive and Arsenal, for all their charm, can’t always win the popularity battle. What it does show, though, is how football loyalty can sometimes run deeper than personal connections.
