The Mexican Midfielder Was ” An Hour Away” To Join The Blues

West Ham midfielder Edson Alvarez has recently revealed that in the 2022 transfer window, Ajax blocked a potential move to Chelsea last year, before joining the Hammers. The 25-year old contributed significantly To Ajax’s success by winning two Eredivisie title. Alvarez has accumulated 147 appearances and netted 13 goals across all competitions. This brilliant performance also kept him in the Mexican squad in the 2018 and 2022 World Cup, making 69 caps for Mexico.

Last year, in the summer transfer window, the Mexican midfielder joined West Ham on a five-year contract from Ajax with a transfer fee of 38M to fill the position of Declan Rice, who moved to Arsenal in the same transfer market. This move was done by West Ham to strengthen their midfield and enhance their performance on the Premier League stage. The star midfielder performed well for the Hammers in his first season in the Premier League, appearing 42 times for the Hammers.

But you might be shocked to hear the news that, the Mexican midfielder could be playing for another London club instead of playing for West Ham. Yes, he could play for Chelsea instead of West Ham. Edson Alvarez recently revealed that he was an hour away from Joining Chelsea in 2022. He also revealed that his former club, Ajax changed their mind and stopped the transfer in the last minute.

In a chat to Burro van Rankin’s Podcast for Caliente TV, Alvarez shared,

“In year three (at Ajax), I had to go to Chelsea, the plane was waiting for me at the airport. Then Ajax told me, ‘You know what: you’re not going’.

Whether people believe it or not, it doesn’t make any difference to me. I’m the one who is here and the one who is living it. I was an hour away from getting on the plane and going to sign for Chelsea and Ajax told me: ‘ You are not going’. So, you’re not leaving, what do you do? There’s no way you’re leaving”

Edson Alvarez doing pretty well in the premier league for the Hammers in the 2023/24 season. The Mexican midfielder scored two goals and provided two assists for the Hammers. And despite failing to sign Edson Alvarez, Chelsea built their midfielder over the past three transfer windows. First, the Blues brought Conor Gallagher. Then in the 2023 January transfer window, Chelsea first brought Enzo Fernandez from Benfica for 107M. Then, they signed Ecuadorian midfielder Moises Caicedo from Brighton in the summer for a fee of 115M.
