Barcelona central defender Ronald Araujo has undergone successful surgery for a thigh injury, a club statement clarified. The 23-year-old defender sustained the injury on Friday while representing Uruguay in a friendly match against Iran. Due to the issue, he was forced to be replaced after just one minute of play.

When Araujo arrived back in FC Barcelona, examinations were performed to ascertain the extent of his injury. It was discovered that he had avulsed the adductor longus tendon in his right thigh. The defender was given the alternative between conservative treatment and surgery. After carefully weighing his options, he decided to have surgery even though it would cause him to miss the FIFA World Cup later this year.

Araujo, who turned down interest from the Premier League to accept a new contract at Camp Nou back in April. He has started each of Barcelona’s six La Liga games in 2022–23. Without a doubt, Araujo is one of Xavi’s most trusted players.

Barcelona released the following statement

“The first team player Ronald Araujo has been operated on successfully for his adductor longus avulsion injury in his right thigh.

“The procedure was carried out by Dr Lasse Lampainen under the supervision of the Club’s medical services in Turku, Finland. The player is unavailable for selection, and his recovery will dictate his return.”

As a result of the injury and the subsequent surgery, Ronald Araujo is set to miss the rest of the matches in 2022. While the club has not clarified the extent of recovery, early reports state the same.

Within the international break, Barcelona lost some of its most prominent players. These include defender Jules Kounde, Araujo, Bellerin, midfielder Frenkie De Jong and forward Memphis Depay. With the packed October schedule, Barcelona would surely miss all the players. The month of October has some of the campaign-defining matches in an El Classico against Real Madrid on the 16th of October. The club also faces Inter Milan and Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
