Former Bayern Munich forward latest name to be linked to Arsenal

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has a number of January transfer targets on his radar in the hopes he can bring at least one of them to Emirates Stadium. The latest player reportedly of interest to Arsenal is Bologna’s Joshua Zirkzee. The former Bayern Munich man has had an impressive start to the season, scoring eight goals in 22 games.

The Gunners are in desperate need of a striker. Eddie Nketiah and Gabriel Jesus are the two natural options available to Arteta; however the latter is once again out with a knee injury. This leaves only one first team player fit to play.

Zirkzee to Arsenal not new rumour

According to The Telegraph, Zirkzee is one option being looked at by Arsenal. He was linked with a move to the Premier League back in 2017. Liverpool, Everton, Manchester United and even Arsenal wanted to sign the youngster, but he ended up joining Bayern Munich.

However, his dream move to the German giants did not quite go to plan. Across three years in the senior team, the 22-year-old played just 12 games. He was never given a prolonged chance despite scoring four goals in his limited gametime. He was eventually sold to Bologna in the summer of 2022.

A deal for Zirkzee does not make sense

Arsenal need a striker but Zirkzee may not be the answer. A proven centre-forward is needed at Emirates Stadium. Although Zirkzee’s hot streak has rightly caught their attention, there is no guarantee he continues this form.

Signing him in the winter window will also be a significant challenge. FFP rules and regulations will make it very difficult to make a marquee signing. A fee in the region of £50 million is said to be the asking price and it’s difficult to see how the Gunners can legally pull that together without making any sales.
