Frenkie De Jong is on United’s radar again this summer

Manchester United

Frenkie De Jong has been one of the world’s best ball-carrying midfielders in the past few seasons. Playing at Barcelona, he has shown consistency and class whenever touching the ball. However, the 26-year-old is once again linked to Manchester United this summer. Last season, Xavi made it clear that he needed Frenkie in his team. Manchester United were pursuing him but could not get him in the end.

A Spanish publication reports that United is still pursuing a move for Frenkie as the summer transfer window of 2024 draws near. They are “prepared in case there is the opportunity to sign him.” PSG is reportedly keen on signing De Jong if the opportunity arises, making United not the only interested club.

The Dutchman is certainly easy to see as a valuable signing for the Red Devils. He makes line-breaking passes and excels at passing the ball and he is among the best players in the world.

Where would Frenkie play?

Kobbie Mainoo would learn invaluable lessons from Manchester United’s best players if the Red Devils signed him. According to the CIES Football Observatory, he is currently valued at £42.8 million, but Barca would probably demand twice that sum. Both Mainoo and Frenkie are ball carriers. They both play as deep-lying playmakers. Frenkie is a way more polished and experienced player and could teach a lot to Kobiee. One of United’s decisions is choosing which player to assume a deeper role, as both have the capability to make significant contributions to the team’s playmaking. This issue mirrors what Barcelona encountered.

United needs to take it into consideration in any case. There is no doubt that Mainoo could learn a lot of skills from De Jong. However, it could either reduce Mainoo’s game time or make him play in a deeper role. Erik Ten Hag will have to plan this carefully so it does not cause any issues for them in the future.
