Nunez deleted all Liverpool-related posts from his Instagram this weekend. This gave way for speculations to emerge. In his most productive season since switching to English football, Nunez has scored eighteen goals for Liverpool. Yet, rumors suggest that when the transfer window opens later this year, Barcelona might make an approach.
Darwin Nunez rumored to join Barcelona
Nunez has reportedly been considered as Robert Lewandowski’s replacement as Barcelona looks to let go of its highest-paid players in the summer, according to The Sun. Ahead of Liverpool’s trip to Villa Park in the Premier League the following week, Darwin Nunez traveled to Disneyland Paris with Ronald Araujo, a star player for Barcelona and an international teammate.
Despite Nunez’s contract with Liverpool expiring in 2028, his future there seems far from assured. When Slot succeeds Jurgen Klopp at Anfield, he is expected to have the final say. But only time will tell if he decides to leave the team.
Liverpool may want to consider a similar course of action as they did with Coutinho if it turns out that Nunez’s departure would be the best choice. In 2018, Liverpool used the proceeds from the sale of the former Reds midfield player to strengthen their defensive line, selling the player to Barcelona for about £146 million. Shortly after Coutinho left, they acquired Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker, and they may try to make similar acquisitions with the money they receive from Nunez’s transfer this summer. Liverpool is in a state of flux due to Klopp’s imminent departure. Slot would have the chance to prepare his team for the upcoming few seasons with a sizeable financial infusion. Darwin Nunez’s leaving could be a blessing in disguise for the Reds.
