Napoli reportedly entered the race with Manchester United to sign the Spanish defender of Villarreal Pau Torres in the upcoming summer transfer window.
Torres has been in the spotlight since making his debut last season for the Yellow Submarines. He even secured his place at the back for Luis Enrique’s Spanish national side. The 24-year-old defender has made 32 appearances in La Liga this season. He managed to score and assist two goals each with 10 clean sheets under Unai Emery.
The Villarreal academy graduate currently has a contract with his boyhood club until June 2024. The defender has a release clause in his contract which is around €50 million. And this amount could rise to €65 million in the last 15 days of the transfer window.
Manchester United are scouting the defender for quite a while now. And the future of Kalidou Koulibaly is uncertain at Napoli that forced them to look around for a quality defender.
Can Napoli win the race with Manchester United for the signature of Villarreal defender Pau Torres?
According to Calciomercato, Napoli are in the market for a new central defender this summer and the Villarreal defender Pau Torres is one of the names in the list who is also linked with Manchester United.
The report also added that the former Napoli defender and the current defensive partner of Torres Raul Albiol has assured Gli Azzurri about the quality of the Spaniard and he would be a perfect fit for them.
If Napoli can manage to keep their Senegalese defender Koulibaly and buy Pau Torres. Then it would become one of the best defensive pairings in Serie A.
Following the uncertainty over the current manager, if Napoli can sign a good manager and give him this defence then Gli Azzurri will be one of the favourites to win the Scudetto next season.
Napoli will have to give their everything to land the Villarreal defender Pau Torres. As Premier League giant Manchester United are also in line for the defender. United are superior in terms of financial power. However, Napoli need to show their skill in the transfer market to beat Manchester United and sign Torres this summer.
