Samuel Umtiti is set to stay at Barcelona for another season

About Football Express India - Indian Super League - I-League

FC Barcelona have been trying to offload their injury-prone center-back Samuel Umtiti all along this whole summer. The Catalans also stated to terminate his contract however, they couldn’t do it due to legal issues. While the club also offered several options to Umtiti in order to leave this summer. But despite all those steps Samuel Umiti is set to stay at Barcelona for another season.

The Frenchman arrived at Camp Nou back in 2016 after showing a promising talent for Olympique Lyonnais. Since his €25 million move Umtit has appeared 132 times for Barcelona in his five-year stay. But the Spanish side was keen to offload the center-back this summer after his falling form and frequent injuries.

Barcelona are in a bit of financial stress with a debt of almost 1.5 billion upon their heads. Following which they wanted to cut off some of their costs to balance their books. And one of the names on that list was Samuel Umtiti who takes home a salary of €8-9 million. The Catalans tried every possible way to get rid of the Frenchman but they seemed to fail as the transfer market closes in a week.

The La Liga side offered a number of clubs as options for Umtiti to leave this summer, but he desires to stay and play for Barcelona. While he also states to only make a move if any club is in Champions League this season. But no Champions League playing are willing to sign an out-of-form defender. Following this, Barcelona threatened to terminate his contract but couldn’t do it as legal issues will follow.

So, it seems that Umtiti will stay at Barcelona this season with not the manager and the club interested in keeping him. Koeman has already stated that he would not play Umtiti as he has a number of options in the center-back. Despite being told he would be not part of the club’s plan Umtiti desires to stay and take home his huge salary this season.
