Barcelona on the outlook for the January transfer market

About Football Express India - Indian Super League - I-League

Barcelona is currently on top of the La Liga table. The club has crashed out of the Champions League in the group stage for the second consecutive year. The crashing although enables them to take part in the Europa League should they defeat Manchester United in the qualifiers in February. The club is set to take part in the Super Cup and Copa Del Rey.

Keeping in mind the crucial fixtures coming up next after the World Cup ends, the board led by president Joan Laporta along with coach Xavi Hernandez has decided to cash in players for two roles. Xavi is well aware of the financial restrictions that the club is facing. Even after activating the fourth lever during the summer, La Liga President has threatened that if FC Barcelona does not make financial progress the club will still be responsible under the 4:1 rule.

The club has therefore decided to invest in positions that are lacking in the current squad.

Barcelona planning to secure players for two key positions

The club is expected to make moves to sign a right-back and a defensive midfielder. These are two of the most fragile positions in the team. Barcelona has never been able to replace Dani Alves. Recent recruitment Hector Bellerin has also not lived up to his expectations with growing concerns over his injury records. The pivot position is well secured with both Busquets and Frenkie De Jong being able to play there. Yet with Busquet’s form dropping and his future unclear, Frenkie’s defensive incapabilities loom whenever he plays in the pivot position.

If the club however decides to initiate moves for an out-and-out midfielder, Manchester City duo Bernado Silva and Ilkay Gundogan are potential targets. Bernardo was linked in the summer only for the move to never happen. However, the financial restrictions might force the club to rethink its approach.
