Barcelona plot move for a Midfielder in January

About Football Express India - Indian Super League - I-League

Barcelona are having a mixed season so far. The Blaugranas are 2nd in La Liga after their defeat against Real Madrid in the El Clasico last weekend. Xavi was critical of the way the team approached the game and why they are still miles away from Real Madrid. Even Though, Barcelona have scored more goals than Los Blancos. The Blaugranas are one of the best teams in La Liga but consistency is difficult to find at this rate. While People may praise their La Liga form, their form in UCL is certainly worrying. They are on the verge of getting knocked out of their UCL group for the 2nd time in a row.

Apart from all this action on the pitch, Barcelona had a really successful transfer window. The club signed Lewandowski who is delivering for them as expected. The likes of Jules Kounde and Christensen have also settled in pretty well. Marcos Alonso has also been really useful for Xavi as a makeshift CB. Hector Bellerin also has played some minutes before he got injured. Xavi is adamant that the team’s quality must be constantly improved. With the world cup on the horizon, players will feel tired eventually and injuries will happen.

Reports say that Barcelona are targeting Youri Tielemans for the midfield position. The Belgian is on the list for a lot of top clubs. But he is not the only one linked with Barcelona. Ruben Neves is considered a long-term DMF solution for the Catalans. But Wolves will not be letting him go easily. Bernardo Silva was very close to joining Barcelona last summer but the price with Manchester City could not be fixed. Martin Zubimendi has renewed his contract with Real Sociedad which makes it difficult for Barcelona to get him.

The midfield dilemma at Barcelona

Barcelona are always known to be the one to dominate the midfield. This has been the case for the last decade with the likes of Xavi, Iniesta, and Busquets. The former 2 are gone but one still remains. Busquets’s superpowers may have diminished a bit but he remains the greatest CDM of the game. Xavi still feels that Sergio Busquets, as a captain, has much more to offer. But De Jong has shown why he deserves to be a starter.

Frenkie De Jong is not getting many minutes, which has really upset the fans, given the quality he has. Gavi and Pedri have proven why they deserve to start ahead of anyone. The question remains if Barcelona will sign another midfielder in the January window to give competition.
