Barcelona are reportedly closing in on signing Flamengo midfielder Gerson. The 23-year-old central midfielder has been impressive for his current club and this has caught the attention of various European clubs.
He is expected to sign for the La Liga club in the summer transfer window. His current club, Flamengo has won their second Brazillian Serie A in a row.
Gerson is currently valued at around €25 million and previously rejected a €16 million bid by Spurs. However, he has still two years left in his contract.
Gerson signing could be a preparation for the future for Barcelona
As per ESPN, Barca has expressed their interest to his representatives and thus initial contact is made for the transfer. However, there’s no information from Flamengo’s end, and no agreement for the transfer fee has been done.
Gerson had stints at Fluminense, AS Roma, and a loan spell at Fiorentina before joining the seven-time Serie A champions. He had made 95 appearances scoring six goals and assisting ten times so far for the Mengao.
However, signing him would be one of the key decisions as Barca looks forward to their future. The Blaugranas already have youngsters like Sergino Dest, Trincao, Pedri, Ansu Fati, Ronald Araujo, and Frenkie de Jong. Gerson might be the perfect player they would opt for.
Additionally, according to other reports, Barcelona have almost completed the deal. Riqui Puig has failed to be a starter and might be leaving the Catalan club. However, he has caught the attention of clubs like Arsenal and Spurs.
Midfield section has been a concern for Ronald Koeman as Philippe Coutinho is out injured, Miralem Pjanic is not performing at his best, and Sergio Busquets nearing his 30s. Georgino Wijnaldum is also under consideration but Gerson would be a better option.
