FC Barcelona in the market for a replacement for Jordi Alba?

About Football Express India - Indian Super League - I-League

According to reports, FC Barcelona is reportedly interested in signing Atalanta defensive star Robin Gosens. They have targeted the Serie A star as a potential replacement for Jordi Alba.

The 26-year-old Gosens has been with Atalanta since the summer of 2017.  He signed from Dutch club Heracles Almelo and has grown into one of the best-attacking wing-backs on display in Italy in recent years.

Till now, he has featured 149 times for Atalanta, bagging 27 goals and 20 assists. Following this impressive form, he has appeared four times for the German national team. Currently, he has also been included in the 26 man squad for Euro 2020.

The 2020/21 campaign has been a particularly prolific one for Gosens, who has emerged as one of Atalanta’s pivotal attacking players from the left wing-back slot. His contributions have helped Atalanta to finish second in Serie A while securing a spot for Champions League.

Indeed, the 26-year-old has racked up an impressive return of 12 goals and 8 assists from 44 games across all competitions. This impressive performance has caught the eye of Barcelona.

Gosens’ current contract runs until 2022, but Atalanta has the option to renew it unilaterally by a year. But he would like to leave to join a higher-level team that can fight for trophies.

Juventus, Inter Milan, AC Milan, and Manchester City have made contact with him. While Leicester City and Chelsea have placed a bid for him. Atalanta will be wanting €40 million for him but would also be open to player exchanges.

Barcelona want a left-back, Gosens top priority?

Barcelona’s 2020-21 season is over which means it’s over to the rumors that will keep us entertained until the football returns in August.

It is believed that Barcelona is going to make some big changes in the team for the next seasons. These changes may be because of the poor season they suffered. They went to finish third in La Liga and were out of the Champions League, although they won the Copa Del Rey.

Talking about the changes they have already made a long list of 14 people who they will offload this summer. Currently, it is believed that they are in the market for a new left-back, subsequent long-term replacement, for Jordi Alba.

The Catalan side has also been linked with Valencia skipper Jose Gaya for quite some time now, but Valencia made it clear that they are not interested in selling their left-back. As a replacement for Gaya, they opted for Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso.

Gosens would fit nicely in Koeman’s system and would also be a potential replacement for Alba. Koeman could use him as the left-wing back and can play him as a left-back in a four-man defence. It is no doubt that a player of Gosens’ quality will be an asset for Barcelona.

Before approaching the player for a transfer, Barcelona should keep one thing in mind. They should push for a swap transfer or a low bid for Gosens. As they are suffering financially due to the COVID-19 pandemic and have to prioritize signing a natural forward.
