Manchester United Hierarchy didn’t think players could adapt to Antonio Conte

Manchester United hierarchy didn’t think that their players could adapt to Antonio Conte. The red devils were in a rush to replace Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer a few months ago at Old Trafford. United did not want to appoint a permanent head coach in the middle of the season, but rather find a temporary solution. Therefore they hired the services of Ralf Rangnick as the manager for the rest of this season.

United were against the idea of hiring Antonio Conte as their head coach. United were on the view that their players would struggle to adapt to Conte’s system. However, Conte was on the radar of united when they were out in the market to replace ole Gunnar Solsjkaer. Under Ralf Rangnick, United have still not shown any signs of positive changes to their results. A number of players are also looking to depart from Old Trafford this month.

Meanwhile, Antonio Conte parted ways with Serie A champions Inter Milan by mutual consent last summer. The 52-year-old was without a club for over 4 months until Tottenham Hotspur came calling. He initially rejected Spurs’ offer last year to succeed Jose Mourinho at the club. However, Conte replaced Nuno Espirito Santo as the head coach in November.

Did Manchester United make a mistake for not appointing Antonio Conte as the head coach?

Conte arrived in England for the first time to become Chelsea‘s manager. The Italian’s two-year stint at Chelsea proved to be quite successful as he won the Premier League in his very first season. He left Stamford Bridge on a high note as Chelsea lifted the FA cup during the 2017/18 season.

The 52-year-old is known for his defensive style of play which has won him so many trophies at different clubs. He is renowned for using a (3-5-2) formation or its defensive variant of (5-3-2). He won 3 consecutive Scudetto’s with Juventus by using the formation of 3-5-2 and also began Juventus’ era of dominance in Serie A.

Former Manchester United player Gary Neville also shared his thoughts about Conte back in October :-

“They won’t bring a hitman in again. A hitman who comes in and does a job for two years. Conte’s available but I wouldn’t bring him to Manchester United. I wouldn’t bring him here now, I wouldn’t.

Gary Neville said on Sky sports

“In my opinion, I don’t think Antonio Conte is a fit for Manchester United. I don’t think he’s a fit. I might be wrong, they might bring him here tomorrow and I’d get behind him.

he added

“We’ve seen a coach with a specific style like Louis van Gaal didn’t work here. I’m not saying there isn’t a manager who can come to Manchester United and do well.”

Due to United’s shortage of players who have leadership qualities, Conte was not hired. The Italian manager could be very demanding from his players and united lack leaders. Following this, the Manchester United hierarchy didn’t think Antonio Conte was the right choice to lead the players.
