Newcastle United set to renew contract of 32-year-old goalkeeper

Nick Pope - Newcastle

Newcastle United lost their first-choice goalkeeper, Nick Pope, due to injury. He dislocated his shoulder and is doubtful to feature in the Euros 2024. Newcastle brought in Karius and relied on their veteran goalkeeper, Dubravka. Dubravka has turned 35 and has started 19 games for Newcastle in the premier league. United will hope to get back Pope before the season ends. He has been one of the best shot-stoppers in the premier league in recent years.

Renewal talks at Newcastle

Karius’ contract expires at the end of the current campaign, so he will be leaving. Necastle will look to keep their third-choice goalkeeper at the club. They could extend the deal with Mark Gillispie by one year. The Mail reports:

“Mark Gillespie will remain at Newcastle for a minimum of another year.”

The club have now activated the option to extend his contract by 12 months, which could be an indicator that fellow goalkeeper Martin Dubravka is on his way this summer.

Loris Karius is set to leave and the Magpies are looking to sign one other keeper to compete with Nick Pope. Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale is on the shortlist, among others.

Gillespie, 32, has not played during the last two seasons; he made three League Cup appearances in 2020/21, but he is well liked in the dressing room and by backroom staff.

Dubravka, 35, will have one year on his contract come June and he could look for a new club.’

Alongside this, it will be interesting to see if The Magpies bring in a new goalkeeper. Although Nick Pope is more than good enough, they need to look for a younger prospect for the goalkeeper position. However, it is up to them to decide whether to trust in their young players and academy or recruit someone from the outside.
