Odisha FC: Surprise of the season

About Football Express India - Indian Super League - I-League

Odisha FC managed to accumulate a total of only 12 points in the 2020-2021 season of the Indian Super League. They were 28 points adrift from the top of the table and 19 from the knockout spots. Their previous season was one to forget and it was clear for everyone to see that a total revamp was the solution.

KIKO RAMIREZ

Ramirez started his managerial journey as the assistant manager of the Spanish-based club Gimnàstic. In his early 15 years as a coach, he managed 4 different Spanish clubs. Later he joined Wisła Kraków, a top-tier Polish football club. After his spell in Poland, he moved back to Spain and joined Sabadell.

He took over the managerial job for Odisha FC ahead of the 2021-2022 season. He then undertook the responsibility to revamp the entire system at Odisha FC.

SQUAD CHANGES

Big changes were made to the squad. Star striker Diego Mauricio was released from the squad. Manuel Onwu, Cole Alexander, and Jacob Tratt followed him soon after to leave several clear spots for new signings.

Odisha FC wasted no time in announcing the new signings. Brazilian veteran Jonathas Cristian de Jesus was snapped up to lead the line for Odisha FC. The striker has experienced life in the Serie ALa Liga, and Bundesliga. He has represented clubs like Torino, Elche, Real Sociedad, and Hannover 96 among others.

Malaysian International Liridon Krasniqi(CM) joined the juggernauts to solidify their midfield. Odisha then went on to complete their roster with the signings of Javi Hernandez(CAM), Victor Mongil(CB), Hector Rodas(CB), and Aridai Cabrera(LW).

EFFECT OF NEW SIGNINGS

The new signings have changed the style of play for Odisha FC. Javi Hernandez, a former winner of the ISL has grabbed 3 goals in 2 matches to light up the new season. Aridai Cabrera has also hit the ground running with 3 goals. Meanwhile, Rodas and Mongil have brought in a calming influence to the backline of Odisha FC.

The results are there to see as Odisha currently rank joint 1st with ATKMBFC in the league table. The team is a new demon now and fears no one. If they keep up their current run of form, they will be one of the favorites for the championship as the season progresses.
