According to several reports, Barcelona might soon be announcing the contract extension of the club’s third captain Sergi Roberto. The Spaniard was tipped off to leave the Catalan camp this summer following many transfer rumors. However, ultimately there was a change in plan as Roberto continues playing for Barcelona this season. And will soon be extending his stay for another two seasons.
Sergi Roberto has been playing for Barcelona since his youth joining the club’s famous La Masia academy. While rising up the ranks in the following years, Roberto made his first-team debut for Barcelona in 2013. And since then, he has been an integral part of Barcelona’s defense and midfield.
However, Roberto’s time at Barcelona seemed to end this summer, as the club wanted to sell him due to financial issues. But there was a change in plan as the club lost Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann this summer. But apart from his transfer rumors this summer, Roberto has been in news due to his contract situation.
The Spaniard’s current contract with Barcelona ends in 2022 and the club offered him a two-year extension. While the new deal also includes a pay cut due to Barcelona’s current situation. The deal is already on the table for Roberto to sign for the last few weeks but the player is taking time to make a decision.
Following which 40,000 Barcelona fans booed Sergi Roberto as they played against Bayern Munich on 15th September. However, as per recent reports, the Spaniard will soon the contract extension as there were positive talks between the board and his agent. And his pay-cut will make him the fourth captain to reduce his salary after Gerard Pique, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba.
